Black Widow Costume
Step 1-Ideas
|
To start every costume, the first thing I do is pull source material. Get images of the full costume, close ups, everything in between. I decided to go with her costume from The Avengers. I think I spent a total of 40$ (but some of that was optional).
|
After I pulled all my source material, I started looking for tutorials on the costume. Out of all the ones I found, I liked this one the most. Really informative and very helpful. I'll show you my take on it below (mine uses more stuff you can find at home).

Step 2-Plan
I hope you read my "Designing your Costume" page, but if you didn't it's fine because I'm going to lay out the plan for this costume for you. Here's an example of what the plan for this costume might look like:
From head to toe:
Hair: Can dye red & curl or a tight pony tail (I opted for number two) Outfit: She wears a full body suit, but I opted for an easier to wear choice of top and bottoms. Top: Black Cami or tank top (have) and a leather jacket (have) Patches: She wears little patches on each shoulder. (make) Belt: Her "spider" belt (make) Utility Belt: A "sturdier" black belt with some pouches I had (one was a binocular pouch, a pocket knife pouch, you can make some if you don't have any) Gloves: Fingerless black gloves. (make or buy) Wristlets: Bullet Bracelets (make) Pants: Black leggings are fine, but I bought leather leggings from Wet Seal for about 15$ (buy or have) Guns: I bought a pair of thigh holsters at a costume store for about 15$. (bought) Shoes: Any pair of black boots are fine, but preferably combat or heeled. (have) |
Step 3- Time to Start making
Project 1: S.H.I.E.L.D PATCHES
For these, I wanted to make my own instead of paying 16$ for two on Etsy (like in the video above). They were surprisingly easy to make. I will try to include a template.
|
Materials needed:
- Craft Foam (gray) - Ball Point Pen - Sharpie (Black) Find a circle about 4'' in diameter to trace. Trace two circles in the gray foam. Cut out each. Using the images from the left based off mine, draw the bird symbol (I'll try to upload a template later). Draw using the ball point, then fill in in with sharpie. When you do your second one, be sure the head faces the opposite way. If you mess up, use the back. Finish them off by using the edge of a sharpie to make the edges of the foam black. This will give them a better, more finished look.Attach them to the leather jacket (making sure the heads are facing forwards) using either hot glue (I did this because the jacket was an older leather jacket I didn't really care about) or another piece of Velcro attached to the back (afterwards just take the Velcro off). I wouldn't recommend sewing because it will ruin the leather and not work well with the foam. |
Project 2: "black widow" symbol belt
This is one I pulled off the video above, with some slight modifications. I already had a black nylon belt, so I used that for the gun holsters and used the cheap, ineffective belt for the decorative "Black Widow" belt.
|
|
Materials Needed:
- Craft Foam (Grey, Red, Black) - Ballpoint Pen - Cheap Belt (or a piece of ribbon or elastic, black) - Velcro (If using a belt) Use the image to the left to create a curved hourglass figure with the grey foam. Make sure it covers the buckle (if you're doing the belt option). Trace the grey shape into the red foam. Cut this one a little bit smaller than the grey. Repeat this with the black foam. Hot glue all three pieces on top of one another (grey first, red, then black). Now either hot glue this to the ribbon/elastic, or attach a patch of Velcro to the back, and another onto the belt. This is so the belt can still work to put on/take off but still allow you to attach the symbol. |
Project 3: "WIDOW'S BITE" BULLET BRACELETS
This is the part of the costume I spent the most time worrying about, but it turns out it is actually really simple. Some cosplayers didn't even know how easy it was, so they made complicated crayon holder or such.

|
Materials Needed:
- Fake bandolier (see 1st image) - Black spray paint (optional) The assembly for this is simple. Simply remove one bullet and create whatever size bracelet you need. Be sure to fit it over your leather jacket. Spray painting it black is optional (Black Widow's are black) but my costume looked just fine without it. |

Step 4- ASSEMBLE
The grand assembly of the outfit. Here are some images of me in my complete costume: (I forgot to put my gloves back on for the photo shoot... oops)
